Remember how excited you were when the Web was first spun? It was as if the world were invented all over again. Every business idea ever imagined ­ newspapers, stores, ad agencies ­ became new again. The Web was the great blank tablet everyone wanted to write on, and some even wanted to read.

During the boom I wrote often that "the Web is not the Internet," but few listened to me. By that I meant that the World Wide Web was just one service created for a universal network. It was the network that was important: its services were subsidiary.

Looking around at the rubble left by the "Web economy" you can see just how true this was.

Start with two ideas from the year 2000 and see how they've evolved into industries. Peer-to-peer network ideas like Napster were turned into real businesses like Groove Network (http://www.groove.net).

Distributed computing ideas like SETI@Home (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/) have been adapted into businesses like Data Synapse (http://www.datasynapse.com/home/index.jsp).

The first idea uses the network to combine the storage capabilities of linked PCs. The second idea uses the network to combine the computing power of linked PCs. Critics who saw only stolen music or E.T. missed the point. Each of these ideas is, potentially, as powerful as the Web itself. Instead of using your computer to go somewhere, as with the Web, or getting stuff sent from other computers, as with e-mail, you can combine capabilities of many computers and create something entirely new in the world.

The big idea for 2001 was extending the network everywhere without wires.

The "Napster" of this year goes by the name 802.11. This was originally designed for home networking, but it came into its glory this year as a way to extend the benefits of a corporate or university Local Area Network throughout the campus. The latest version of the standard, 802.11g, (http://www.internetnews.com/wireless/article/0,,10692_924941,00.html) was approved just last month, and will be able to deliver 11 Mbps of data throughput, without wires, at the 2.4 Ghz frequency range. The danger with 802.11 became shockingly apparent after September 11. How do you secure it? Any hacker with a PC and an 802.11 card would have a back-door into your corporate network and all its secrets, as the BBC reported most effectively on November 6 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_1639000/1639661.stm) .

My point is that all these "problems" are really business opportunities in disguise. If your software can authenticate users of wireless networks, and find a way to charge them for the bandwidth they consume, you can build yourself quite a business. Once that happens the way is clear to extending networks everywhere people wander, to whatever platform they're wandering with, at speeds that make today's broadband DSL connections look slow by comparison.

The year 2002 will bring new big ideas, new ways to embrace, extend, and use Internet networks and the computers within them. Press talk about problems and danger is just that, talk. If you make yourself part of the solution to these "problems," you will make yourself a lot of money.

So when you sift around for business ideas this Christmas season, don't just look at the Web as it is. Look at the Web as it will be, find what is missing from that picture, then figure out a way to create it and profit.
