Looking Back, Looking Ahead...
By Dana Blankenhorn

Everyone understands 2001 as being two separate years.

The first ran from the disputed election of George W. Bush http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:kZKFpUD491g:supct.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/00-949.ZPC.html+Supreme+Court+decision+in+Bush+vs.+Gore&hl=en) until September 11 (http://september11.archive.org/). The second will end along with the present war in Afghanistan.

On the Internet the first year was marked by an internal struggle between advocates of Internet liberty and advocates of copyright security. The second year has been marked by a struggle against a ruthless external foe (http://www.fbi.gov/mostwant/topten/fugitives/laden.htm), in which security is of paramount importance and all else is secondary.

Our obsessions of the first year, as contained in my book ("Living on the Internet," ) seem as quaint today as Monica Lewinsky's stained dress (http://www.dancingmonica.com/blewdress.htm). Those obsessions included such things as the right to anonymity, the privacy of Web logs and e-mail, whether Microsoft would be broken up, and the rights of copyright holders to control Internet distribution.

The obsessions of the second year, of course, involve building police power to fight the common enemy, and securing the Internet as we would a nuclear power plant.

Through both years the Internet economy has sputtered and faltered. The collapse of stock prices in the spring was followed by a contradictory impulse to prevent the delivery of broadband applications necessary for growth in the summer. In the second year the real economy collapsed with the Towers, the promised "solution" of Windows XP got off to a shaky start and while e-commerce survivors flourished (http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1007-200-336707.html) along with security companies (http://quote.yahoo.com/q?s=ISSX&d=c&t=3m&l=on&z=b&q=l).

As the year ended Wall Street was ahead of the curve, looking to new chips, a new generation of bandwidth and technologies such as 802.11 to get the old boom started again. (http://quote.yahoo.com/q?s=qqq&d=c&k=c1&t=3m&a=v&p=s&l=on&z=m&q=l)

It was not the best of times but, unless you lived in New York, Israel, or some other true war zone it wasn't the worst of times, either. (I finally got to the Big Island [as a speaker at E-Commerce 2001™ Conference], and it's glorious -- Mahalo.)

The war we were promised would be nasty, brutal, casualty-filled and long. The war we got was a Gulf War re-run, with a few months of bombing followed by a quick ground victory.

Slowly all the old Internet issues returned, but this time the side demanding security was winning all the battles. Anonymous sites like Safeweb (http://www.safeweb.com/ ) disappeared, the government quickly won the right to tap Internet logs and transmissions, and protests were greeted by Attorney General Ashcroft's memorable line, "To those...who scare peace-loving people with phantoms of lost liberty, my message is this: Your tactics only aid terrorists." (http://chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/chi-0112090460dec09.column?coll=chi-news-col)

The vast majority of Americans agreed with Ashcroft. There was no objection to his Internet wiretaps, and overwhelming support for his creation of special squads in all FBI field offices, and task forces around the country, even though they would not just be involved in fighting cyberterrorism but "cybercrime generally." We discovered just what Ashcroft meant this month with a sudden international raid on Warez sites .

The question awaiting the capture or death of Osama Bin Laden was what new world would we find in the next new year, 2002.

Time to take off the historian's hat and put on that of the seer.

The problem with predicting the future is that predictions are usually based on the past.

The "Naisbitt Method", used in the "Megatrends" books, was to collect newspaper stories from the last few years and extrapolate those trends forward. It works, after a fashion. But it doesn't really work at all.

The Naisbitt method doesn't account for economic cycles, which produce constant change for all businesses. It doesn't account for sudden shocks like September 11.

It doesn't account for sudden technology changes, like the World Wide Web. It doesn't account for sudden changes in government policy, or changes in the national mood.

Given all that, anyone who looks ahead must do so with caveats and a bit of trepidation. It also helps to be humble and look at your own record.

Last year I predicted, "Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy night." (http://www.a-clue.com/archive/00/cl001225.htm) (Got that right.) A year earlier I predicted that IP Version 6 would become a key political issue. (http://www.a-clue.com/archive/00/cl000103.htm). (Got that wrong.) Then there was December 1997, when I predicted that many Internet start-ups would soon discover new chapters to their stories - 11 and 7. (http://www.a-clue.com/archive/97/cl971229.htm). (Right, but frankly too early to be useful.)

Now that you've seen my record let's move ahead:

The top trend of 2002 will be 802.11, or "Wi-Fi." Venture capitalists are starting to back companies that deliver commercial-grade wireless broadband. The industry has begun developing its own press sources. It has even gotten its own backlash .

The economics of Wi-Fi are compelling. You don't need a frequency allocation, the equipment is cheap, and the result is to extend every corporate network and broadband connection using it. If you can cellularize and sectorize this connectivity, you have a broadband overlay that can completely bypass the ILECs -- Verizon, Qwest, SBC and BellSouth. (Connections can be made directly to long distance POPs or fiber runs.)

The countervailing trend will be a new attempt to regulate telecommunications, led again by the ILECs. Their latest argument is based on September 11. (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/12/15/nyregion/15VERI.html?todaysheadlines) Only giant competitors should be allowed to go against the Bells, Verizon insists, claiming no collection of small companies could have brought back service to Lower Manhattan. That's completely unproven, and three months after the disaster, 10,000 phone lines there still don't work.

Arguments here are irrelevant anyway - instead analysts should follow the money. The Tauzin-Dingell subsidized monopoly bill will come up again in March. If it passes every small business in America should re-evaluate its support for anyone who voted "aye."

The biggest unsolved problem Webmasters face entering 2002 is finding a way to pay for content. Most content remains on the Web, but advertisers are looking elsewhere - to e-mail, to "wraps" and to sponsoring software -- for their branding.

When they advertise in this way their brand message gets across, unfiltered, while consumers aren't angered. When consumers get angry, brands get hurt. And consumers have been angered by such things as "mouse-over" ads that cover content, or pop-ups, pop-unders, and pop-overs that made them play "whack-a-mole" in 2001 or get anti-ad software (http://software.xfx.net/utilities/popupkiller/).

I expect you'll see a lot more sponsorships, with whole pages or sections surrounded by a single advertiser's message, in the next few months. I think you'll see more Web publishers buying pre-and-post impression studies, and auditing their circulations (at the risk of losing much of it). But the Web ad recovery (as opposed to the Internet ad recovery, which has already begun) will be slow.

Security and law enforcement are obvious trends for 2002. In the wake of September 11 governments worldwide demanded, and received, all the legal authority they need to learn what you read, write and do on this medium, in the name of preventing another disaster. Governments have also greatly expanded their budgets for Internet "law enforcement," not just aiming at terrorists but at violations of copyright as well. How well they implement these powers, and how they move to expand their control to, say, music copyright and all material relating to sex and violence, will be worth watching.

==> Thom's New Resources For Profit...
by Thom Reece

Here's an amazing opportunity to get 2002 started with a bang!

If you're serious about finally making your Internet business a raging success this year than you owe it to yourself to pay careful attention.

You see, about 2 weeks ago, Yanik Silver released a totally new set of videos from his presentation at the sold-out $4,995.00/per person "Internet Marketing Lab" in Washington, DC.

(In case you haven't heard of Yanik, he's the 28-year old kid who has taken the Internet world by storm. He cranks one successfully moneymaking project after another -- and finally he's sharing everything.)

Here's the deal:

Since Yanik still hasn't had time to put up a complete sales letter detailing everything -- he's letting me offer you the same private, pre-publication invitation he gave only to his personal subscribers.

But you'll have to be fast. Yanik's office will be placing a follow-up order from the video duplicator that will go in Jan 10th. After that - this special pre-publication deal is over.

It's rare to get a second chance. I suggest you jump on this now!

You can click here for additional details or to reserve your set.

Thom

P.S. Below is Yanik's original email with more details:

I'm sorry you weren't there ...

You see, a few months ago I presented at the sold-out "Internet Marketing Lab" in Washington, DC put on by Ken McCarthy. Attendees paid up to $4,995.00 to be there for two intense days (and I'm not even counting travel costs).

They paid this seemingly outrageous amount because this event was unlike anything ever done before on Internet marketing. This was NOT just another seminar, lecture or even a "boot camp". There was theory here, no case studies and absolutely no B.S.

And let me tell you - getting in was harder than breaking into Fort Knox!

Ken was super picky about who would be accepted. He didn't want this to be some kind of Internet "wannabe" seminar. He only wanted real players who were ready to step up to the next level. Believe me, Ken rejected many more applicants than he took (I even got emails back from customers asking me to reason with Ken because he refused to take their money!).

Fact is, this was the first practical tool- by-tool, technique-by-technique, strategy-by- strategy and screen-by-screen Internet experience. Truly a hands-on "LAB". I literally poured out my entire Internet experience. I held nothing back revealing exactly what I was doing online and the explanation behind it. That's why I hate the thought that you weren't there - but you don't have to miss out entirely...

The good news is that my presentation from the exclusive Internet Marketing Lab was professionally taped and edited into an incredible 3-volume set, entitled "Yanik Silver's Internet Marketing Secrets Exposed!"

---------------------------------------------

You can click here for additional details or to reserve your set.

---------------------------------------------

No doubt about it - this was first time I've *ever* showed in explicit detail exactly what tools, software and techniques I use and *how* I use them. Right before your eyes you get to see exactly how I run my online business that has brought in over $500,000.00 my first full year.

You'll get confidential access to my stats and numbers. Plus, you'll actually see as I walk you through how I run all my profitable, moneymaking email campaigns - LIVE, right on the spot!

Watch exactly how I create money on demand! You'll see me take a small opt-in email list and send out a simple email (that took no more than 20 minutes to create) to generate over $1,200.00 in less than 24 hours. And this was for a product I didn't create and didn't have to lay one finger on. Positively awesome!

Ken made me promise not to to completely pull back the curtain to show attendees *exactly* what I'm doing online. No theory, no boring lecture and definitely no "10 steps to follow"....

He wouldn't stand for that.

My instructions were to reveal everything about my Internet business just as if I was hanging out having a drink with my best friend. This literally turned out to be a "behind-the-scenes", "all-access-pass" to my Internet business.

But don't take my word for it that I delivered - listen to what a couple attendees had to say:

---------------------------------------------

"In the first 2 hours I got enough information to pay for the whole trip and seminar. What a smart high level seminar."

- John Paul Mendocha, Grand Terrace, CA

"This is a kick-butt, no nonsense lab hosted by Net savvy people that will completely blow your mind with wonderful information and a wealth of ideas. The speakers were all no b.s. folks who make money on the Net all the time and share their techniques and successes."

- Michael Gormley, Garden Grove, CA

"Delivered much more than expected! Priceless. Couldn't recommend it more. The best I've ever participated in. Thanks guys!"

- Keith Geckler, Gastonia, NC

---------------------------------------------

Okay, but even with these raving reviews, I need you to trust me a little because I haven't had time to write a full-blown sales letter for this new tape series yet. I'll probably have it done the first part of 2002 but this information is so critical to your online success that I didn't want you to wait that long.

So let me briefly go over just a few of the highlights you'll see:

* The exact numbers from my website and how I track everything.

* The absolute easiest way to create cash anytime you feel like it. You'll see exactly how I do it so there's nothing left to chance. It doesn't matter if you have a product or not. This works every time you send out an email!

* How to put virtually your entire Internet business on total autopilot. I just got back from Aruba for a week and during that time I was gone I deposited $12,352.89 in my account all while relaxing at the beach.

* The exact detailed steps I take to ferret out new hot selling information product ideas - I've never presented this in its entirety before.

* How I built an incredible powerful network of 5,000+ affiliates in less than a year starting from zero.

And lots more -

Bonus #1: Free twenty-minute phone consultation direct with me. I regularly charge $500.00 per hour for consultation but I don't take on many clients because I can spend my time working on new projects or just hanging out. I doubt I'll include this bonus when I release it to the general public!

Bonus #2: The exact hand out material given out to the attendees, including the single, most important piece of paper you'll receive. This is my integrated Internet Marketing blueprint that is the most succinct and neatly categorized explanation of my entire marketing process distilled onto one single sheet of paper.

Bonus #3: My personal bookmarks. How would you like to see which sites I regularly access and visit? Now you can! This is something I've never made public before. I'll give you my personal bookmarks that I consider to be the most important discussion boards, marketing resources, copywriting resources, research sites, etc. etc.

Bonus #4: A way to make your entire investment FREE! You'll get a $299.00 savings certificate good for the entire 2-day "Internet Marketing Lab" video series (if and when) they are released.

=======================

100% no-risk guarantee

=======================

Even though I'm asking you to cut me a little slack since there is no complete sales letter detailing everything on these video - I won't leave you without a 100% can't-lose, ironclad guarantee. Here it is: If you're not absolutely thrilled after watching these videos - for any reason at all - I'll gladly buy them back from you, anytime for up to one full year!

I don't think I could be any fairer than that. Reserve it now:

You can click here for additional details or to reserve your set.

==============================================

Special Pre-order discount - read immediately

==============================================

How much would it be worth to you to be able to spend a day with me?

Imagine you and I sitting down together and going over exactly how I run my web sites on autopilot? What if you could peer over my shoulders, see the exact tools and techniques I'm using....and get a personal explanation on exactly how to do everything I'm showing you

In other words, how would you like to get a guided "hands-on" tour of every facet of my online business so you too can go out and duplicate my success? That's exactly what you'll get on this video set.

Many of my 'students' have gone on to start living the kind of life they only imagined before. Take this example:

---------------------------------------------

"Just a quick update if you don't mind. Especially since I've used a lot of your information in the process of marketing. Since releasing our new eBook on August 1st 2001, we have now sold 965 copies of our eBook. With 9 refunds for net sales total of 956 eBooks at $49.95 which of course can be verified through ClickBank. Right now it's ClickBanks #1 investment program. Sales continue to be strong. Just wanted to let you know how one of your students is doing. (smile!). - Stephen A. Pierce, rapidfireswingtrading.com

---------------------------------------------

Now, what kind of price tag do you think I should tack on for this knowledge? This isn't some watered down ebook. I already told you attendees paid up to $4,995.00 in tuition to get to this lab PLUS a couple hundred bucks for airfare, hotel, food and then add in time away from the office. But I'm not going to charge you that.

However, I'm not going to give it away either. That would be foolish. When the sales letter for this video series is ready I'll probably sell it for $299 (maybe even $399) but right now I'll let you have it for just $249 - until Jan 10th.

That's at least a $50.00 savings over the soon to be retail price!

Why?

Two reasons -

1. First, with the New Year fast approaching, I thought this would be a perfect way to help reward my most valued customers and help you make 2002 your best year ever (even during these so-called "hard times")!

2. I'm about to place an initial stocking order with the video duplicator and if you reserve your set now I can get a quantity discount that I can pass on to you.

However, I must warn you. This is probably the only time you will ever be able to get this complete 3-video set at this price. I will promote the exclusive Lab videos again - and the price will go up at least $50.00. No ifs, ands or buts - so if you like a bargain, take advantage of this no-risk offer right now. (This deal is gone after January 10, 2002.)

If you wait, it's going to cost you. But even more important than saving $50 bucks right now is the time and effort you'll waste trying to go at the Internet alone.

You missed the one-time event. But don't miss out twice.

You can click here for additional details or to reserve your set.

All the best,

Yanik Silver

P.S. The tuition for the entire 3-day "Internet Marketing Lab" was up to $4,995.00 per person. This live tape series will be sold for $299.00 once the sales letter is done but if your order before January 10th, before the order goes to the video duplicator, you'll save $50.00 during the pre-publication offer.

You can click here for additional details or to reserve your set.

P.P.P.S. Skeptical? Here are a few more comments from LAB attendees that they made right on the spot:

"Highly recommended to anyone interested in growing their business it to the next *several* levels. You don't want to miss the candidness of the experts and attendees in this hands on laboratory. Other seminars focus on theories, this one focused on useable ideas now!"

- Mitch Carson, impactproducts.net

"The single most powerful seminar on internet marketing I've ever attended. Ken's style and guests gave until there was nothing left to give. They covered the waterfront of existing and future trends to wring out every dollar possible."

- John Iams, San Diego, CA

"Even as a speaker I learned a *ton* of new ideas and tactics to help expand my business even more! What a great place for everyone to learn in a 'mastermind' setting."

- Bob Gatchel, internetcheapskate.com

"Great content and speakers. Very relevant information. I'd definitely recommend this to my clients and anyone who is interested in a no-fluff, how-to-do-it approach to improving his or her online performance."

- Jon Keel, paidsearchenginetools.com
